Serge VANESON
Engraver on crystal
Craft National Living Treasures 2006

Joined the Baccarat firm in 1965 at the age of 14, Serge Vaneson is part of the jewels of the elite of the Meilleurs Ouvriers de France (Best Workers of France), title that he holds twice: MOF Cutter in 1982 and MOF Engraver in 2000.

Eternally impassioned by this trade, Serge is always ready to launch himself in the creation of dreamlike or improbable pieces, true masterpieces that play on the technical prowess of the infinitely large to the infinitely small: How to tame the crystal, this material so evasive and so restive, to work until the most pure perfection all in innovating on a creative and technical plane. It is the equation that Serge takes great care to resolve for 25 years.

Serge admits a vital need for new challenges: to create exceptional collector or designer pieces, notably for the “Memoire” and “Rencontre” collections, or even special orders from the most demanding customers.

For the “Mémoire” collections, re-edition of pieces exposed during the Universal Expositions of the XIXth century that he must re-create exactly based on the archives (perpetuate the memory of an irreplaceable human know-how) like, for example, the Pendule Eléphant, the Dromadaire mounted on a vase, the Reliquaire, the Vase du Negus over 1.60 m tall… Also for the “Rencontre” collections, future pieces of tomorrow’s museum collections resulting from collaborations with the masters of the design world, bringing Serge to work closely with the most prestigious designers such as Serge Mansau, Ettore Sottass, William Sawaya and Phillippe Starck.
