Pierre MEYER
Decorative ivory-turne
Craft National Living Treasures 2004

As the son and grandson of cabinetmaker, Pierre MEYER was the proud successor of his father’s workshop in 1970 at the age of 29 years old. He already had 16 years of experience. From this moment, he will widen his knowledge and competences (cabinet making, marquetry, woodturning, table-making,… precious wood, bones, scale, horn, ivory…)

His passion for figured-turning will start with a challenge. An antiquarian confided him one day “we can’t find turners as in the past”, because he was looking for someone to make two missing pieces of a chessboard made in turning and canton ball. This man finely accepted to give him the two pieces. From this moment, Pierre MEYER will have only one goal, to realise these two objects. Therefore, he will study the reference book from the 18th century: LE PLUMIER. He reads, reads again and makes. He succeeded in elaborating a special turning process. With perspicacity and many attempts he realised the missing pieces. Passion was born. After years, he will improve his technique while studying the fabrication of many pieces such as spiral staircase, diamond point, false wicker, aspect of flower or lace. To a perfect control of this art. He restores many different pieces in turning: pots, silt, box and even realises creation for himself or prestigious collectors.
