Ludwig VOGELGESANG
Cabinetmaker
Craft National Living Treasures 2010
At the age of 18, having travelled the world, Ludwig Vogelgesang becomes convinced that he wants to be a craftsman. He decides to come to France, where he teaches himself the skills of cabinet making. In 1980, he creates his own marque, Ludwig & Dominique, dedicated to the restoration of rare Art Deco pieces. Using his knowledge and talent, he acquires skills and experience and becomes a specialist in the art restoration market. In 1995, he expands the work of his atelier to include custom-made designs and creations. His first creation, the jewellery cabinet Slender, is shown at the Le Galuchat exhibition at the Bibliothèque Forney and is a great success in the world of fine crafts.
Ludwig and Dominique’s clients are leaders in the field of Art Deco: antique dealers, renowned decorators, prestigious auction houses, and specialist collectors. Collectors have contributed to a revival of the market, restoring the prestige of magnificent new creations.
Ludwig & Dominique conceptualizes and creates exceptional custom-made pieces of furniture. These are outstanding works, often arising from an initial idea or a simple sketch and requiring subtle, refined completion. The team’s skill and expertise enable the atelier to meet any demand for luxury pieces, from furniture to paneling to marquetry…
Ludwig & Dominique’s designers and craftsmen work together closely on each individual creation, focusing on the client’s wishes as they develop. Each individual piece is marked with the atelier’s own stamp.
Ludwig & Dominique works with rare, noble and precious materials. Sensitive to the qualities of powerful and dense woods such as rosewood, ebony or oak, the craftsman combines them tastefully with the subtle refinement of materials such as shagreen, mother of pearl, mica, straw, parchment and burnt wood.
For cabinet maker Ludwig Vogelgesang, every project is a challenge, requiring him to constantly improve his technical approach. He uses both traditional and new methods: for example, he has developed a sophisticated vacuum plate that can grip and hold any shape in place, a very effective tool tailored specifically to his needs. Such expertise evolves with time and experience: practice makes a cabinet maker perfect. Ludwig keeps its artistic heritage alive, innovating and preserving, adapting its techniques to respect both tradition and nature. In 2019, following the receipt of the award “Pour l’intelligence de le main”, Ludwig & Dominique embarked upon new fields of innovation beginning with Argo, in which the copper lattice is fused to the wooden shell.
